The 104 volunteer judges working with the MD|DC Credit Union Scholarship Program have selected this year’s winners from among the essay-based entries, photo-based entries, video-based entries.
The Scholarship Program is the Foundation’s longest-running program with more than $135,000 dedicated to the program since 2006 alone.
Credit unions are encouraged to offer this program as their own as a way to help their young members, encourage additional youth members, and bond with their current college-aged members.
Each of this year’s winners will receive a $1,000 scholarship award.

The $12,000 Credit Union College Scholarship Program for 2017 is underway now! Your college-bound members are eligible to apply for one of ten $1,000 essay-based scholarships, one $1,000 video-based scholarship, and/or one $1,000 photo-based scholarship. And yes, members can apply in all three categories.

Deadline for applications is March 31, 2017. Awards will be made in May 2017.

This year’s essay topic is:
“As a credit union member, explain why someone should choose a credit union as their primary financial institution over alternative service providers, such as for-profit banks.”
This year’s video topic is:
“Create a 60-second advertisement targeted specifically at a younger viewer (under the age of 30) that highlights the benefits of credit union membership.”
Photographers are invited to capture an original photograph that represents the credit union core value “Respectful.”
Any member of a Maryland or D.C.-based credit union who is entering their freshman through senior year of college or trade school may apply. This scholarship does not apply to students in post-graduate programs nor payment of student loans.
The Foundation is pleased to offer this opportunity for credit unions to help their young members. The awardees will receive needed financial assistance to help them meet their tuition expenses and the essay, video, and photo topics provoke innovative and useful responses to help you better serve your college-aged members while the applicants earn a little more about your credit union.
